after falling asleep researching airstreams for sale, i dreamt that i met my soul mate. i sat down next to him in one of the last seats on a long bus ride to an unknown destination. it was hot and sunny. he was singing some billie holiday song and i joined in, thankful that his music was loud enough for me to hear through his headphones because somehow i’d forgotten to charge my mp3 player. we fell in love instantly, but only for a few hours. he became my best friend in a matter of minutes and he pulled me so close to him that our skin stuck together. i guess i said something to him, it was a blur, and he looked at me with disgust, moved seats, and later was nowhere to be found and i was alone. i had a perfect 3 hours with this man and was left with this terrible loneliness and ache for his company. who is he? where did he go?

it’s beautiful and sad that sometimes it takes a tragedy to bring a family together. in the garage across the street, through clouds of smoke, men in coveralls were holding babies and playing poker. women were carrying beers around in coozies and songs were playing loudly out of the old jukebox. i became friends with family i have never met and likely will never see again. we shared stories and laughed. there were so many tears, hugs, and thank-yous. my sister and i took turns playing hide-and-seek with the kids and throwing snowballs at trees and tackling them to the ground, tickling them until they cried.

this is life. shit happens. it an an overwhelmingly heartbreaking tragedy: spending two million dollars to keep a man alive, countless days spent in an incurable pain. but alas, he brought all of us together. meeting his family, i got to know him more than i probably ever would have. his youngest brother looked so much like him that it hurt sometimes. quiet, observant, chuckling in the corner. he had is eyes. and his mouth.

my uncle was not just an uncle, but a grandfather to my sibling and me. without him, my childhood wouldn’t have been the same. it’s only now that i realize his role was so much more. now that it’s too late. i guess he knew, though. he told the pastor in his last days that he was scared to leave my aunt. he wanted her to be okay. she will be. his loving, playful spirit has brought her peace.

tonight won’t be the last time i sit in that garage-turned-clubhouse. next to that dismantled trans am, i’ll drink a beer and play songs on the jukebox with my uncle’s best friend. i only wish that it wouldn’t have taken his death to open that door. i wish we could sit next to him in that wood paneled room again. until next time, lynn. you will never be forgotten. not anywhere. but especially not in that clubhouse on lantern hill. i bet you’re there right now having a laugh at all of us.

when i finally got home last night, i slipped on his cowboy boots and was comforted that even though he’s gone, his suffering is over. my aunt reminded me yesterday that i will always keep his name with me: lynn.
